Forging Ahead
This moment is one of immense pride and reflection—my dissertation proposal has been successfully defended. This milestone marks a significant step forward for me and the broader conversation on leadership, identity, and equity in higher education.
A Courageous Study in a Complex Social Climate
The research I am undertaking is not just timely; it is necessary. In an era where Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives face unprecedented scrutiny, this study stands as an act of courage. It dares to explore the lived experiences of Generation Z Black professionals in student affairs leadership at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), a space where identity, leadership, and institutional mission intersect in profound ways.
In today’s social and political climate, studies like these are often met with resistance, but that resistance only reinforces why this work must be done. Understanding how the next generation of Black leaders navigates these spaces is essential to shaping a more inclusive and effective leadership pipeline. The defense of my proposal was not just about securing approval; it was about affirming the importance of this research at a time when voices advocating for equity must be louder and more resolute than ever.
Next Steps: Awaiting IRB Approval
With the proposal successfully defended, the next phase of this journey is already in motion. My study has been submitted to the Indiana Tech Institutional Review Board (IRB), and I am currently awaiting final approval to begin data collection. This stage is crucial, as it ensures that all research protocols align with ethical standards and that participants' experiences are honored with integrity and respect.
Once IRB approval is granted, I will move forward with interviews and data collection, gathering insights that will contribute to a richer understanding of the challenges and triumphs of Gen Z Black professionals in student affairs leadership. This is where theory meets lived reality, and I am eager to amplify the voices of those who are shaping the future of higher education leadership.
